El cuadro, un óleo sobre lienzo, fue pintado por Domeniko Theotokópoulus, apodado el Greco, entre 1577 y 1579. Puede verse en la Galería de las Colecciones Reales de Madrid.

This banner was made for Lepanto’s battle and nowadays it belongs to Toledo’s Cathedral, which owns several other banners made and used too in that battle.
This one in particular normally is exhibited with a big Cross and, at its base, Pope Pius V’s coat of arms, as a reminder of the founder of the Holy League created to «protect Christianity against the Turks». At its right, the Spanish national emblem is positioned and at its left, the Venetian one, all of them linked by a golden chain, from which hangs the coat of arms of D. John of Austria.
