The Main Chapel is installed in the apse. Until the reform of the late nineteenth century, it was presided over by a canvas by Francisco Bayeu, in which the apparition of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary to Saint Francis of Assisi is represented. The painting is currently located in the choir. The austere appearance of that time was transformed with the aforementioned remodelling, in which numerous ornamental elements were installed, from materials such as marble, noble woods, bronze or gold. The chevet is presided over by five mural paintings, framed by four large pilasters, with golden edges. They are the work of Manuel Domínguez and Alejandro Ferrant and focus on different episodes in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The half vault that serves as the roof of the enclosure was decorated with paintings by José Marcelo Contreras, on golden backgrounds.
