Desde el primitivo alminar musulmán hasta la actual Torre Campanario, esta arquitectura ha marcado la imagen y el perfil de Córdoba. Si a lo largo del tiempo ha mantenido una misma función esencial, la de convocar a los fieles, sus formas y estilos han variado. Sus 54 metros de altura la convierten en la construcción más elevada de la ciudad.
Tras la conquista cristiana, el antiguo alminar de la Aljama queda reconvertido en campanario. Su aprovechamiento se sucede hasta el año 1589, cuando un terremoto afecta a su estructura y se decide la edificación de una nueva torre que envuelve parte de los vestigios califales.
La nueva torre catedralicia es realizada según el proyecto de Hernán Ruiz III (o el Joven), que llegó a concluir el cuerpo de campanas. Posteriormente, se suceden las intervenciones de Juan Sequero de Matilla, arquitecto que añade el cuerpo del reloj, y de Gaspar de la Peña, autor de la linterna sobre la que se asienta la figura de San Rafael, obra de Pedro de la Paz y Bernabé Gómez del Río.

From the ancient Muslim minaret to the actual Tower, this architecture has shaped the image and the profile of Córdoba. During that long period, its actual function hasn’t changed: calling the faithful to the prayer, although both styles and ways have changed. Its 54 meters of height has actually made it the highest construction of the city.
After the Christian conquest, the old minaret from the Aljama was transformed into a bell tower. It lasted till 1589, when an earthquake compromised its structure and a new construction was agreed.
The new Cathedral’s bell tower was built based on a project by Hernán Ruiz III (or the Young), who actually died before finishing it. After that, there were several interventions by Juan Sequero de Matillo, who adds the body of the watch and by Gaspar de la Peña, author of the lantern that serves as foundation to the statue of Saint Raphael which crowns the building. The statue’s authors were the sculptors Pedro de la Paz and Bernabé Gómez del Río.
