Data de antes del siglo XIII, y aunque en un principio era una plaza situada extramuros del recinto amurallado, posteriormente quedó incorporada dentro de la ciudad, convirtiéndose a partir del siglo XVI en el centro urbano, social y económico, carácter que mantiene en la actualidad. Se llamó plaza del Mercado por ser el lugar donde se celebró, a partir de la Edad Media, el mercado semanal y la importante feria anual, concedida por el rey de Castilla en 1184. Así mismo, sirvió como escenario privilegiado para todo tipo de festejos públicos, incluidas las corridas de toros, hasta el siglo XIX. En el siglo XVII fueron soportalados sólo los dos laterales sobre los que tenía jurisdicción el Concejo. En el siglo XIX sufrió diversas transformaciones que le concedieron su aspecto actual. Fue en ese momento cuando mudó su nombre por el actual de plaza de Cervantes.

It was built before the 13th century and although at first it was situated outside the city’s walls, after the expansion of the city it was brought in the city. Since the 16th century, it has been the city’s social and economic heart.
At first it was named «Market Square» as it was where the weekly market and the importante annual fair took place since the early Middle Ages, granted by the King of Castille in 1184.
It also served as privileged stage for every public celebration, including bullfighting, until the 19th century. In the 18th century only two sideways were covered for the Council took place there. In the 19th century it suffered several transformations that gave it its actual appearance. It was then that its name was changed to Cervantes’ square.
